Guesthouses and rooms in central Madrid: how to get it right
Staying in central Madrid is the best way to see it all on foot, and you don’t need a hotel to do it. A well-chosen guesthouse (a Spanish «hostal») or a room with a private bathroom gives you the same location for much less. Here’s what to look for.

Which part of the centre
Sol and Gran Vía: the most central and lively, ideal for a first visit. Ópera and the Royal Palace: just as central but quieter and grander, a short walk from everything. La Latina and Huertas: for tapas and nightlife, noisier at weekends. The practical test: metro less than five minutes away and the sights you want within walking distance.
What to check before you book
Private or shared bathroom: it’s not always obvious and it makes a big difference. Interior or exterior room: exterior rooms get more light and sometimes a balcony; interior ones are usually quieter. How and until when you can get in: whether you need to meet someone for the keys or you get a code. Where to leave your bags if you arrive before check-in or leave late. And if there are three of you, whether there are triple rooms: they’re usually better value than a double and a single.

What’s the difference between a hostal and a room in the centre?
In practice, not much: both usually offer private rooms, many with a bathroom, in small, well-located buildings. What matters is checking the bathroom, how you get in and where it is.
Interior or exterior room?
Exterior if you want light and street views; interior if quiet matters more for sleeping.
Where can I leave my luggage before check-in?
At Ópera Stays you have Smart Lockers: free lockers you book before you arrive, from 11:00 on arrival day until 22:00 on departure day.
Are there rooms for three in the centre?
Yes. Ópera Stays has triple rooms, one with a balcony.
